At Eletcrical Protection we provide Electrical Installation Condition Reporting to BS7671 which is an inspection of the condition of an electrical installation. This identifies any failings against the national safety standard on electrical installations and is a legal requirement within the UK. Electrical Installation Condition Reporting (formally called Periodic Inspection and Testing) examines and evaluates the electrical installation's safety, and/or deterioration due to a number of factors, such as damage, wear, tear, corrosion, excessive electrical loading, ageing & environmental influences, or items of none compliance which may give rise to danger. Regular testing assures a safe working environment for you & employees. Every electrical installation deteriorates with age and use, it is essential that they are maintained in order to ensure that the safety of others is not put at risk. Legalisation requires that all electrical installations are kept in a safe working condition.
The Fire Precautions (workplace) Regulations 1997 state that "Emergency routes and exits requiring illumination must be provided with emergency lighting of adequate intensity in case lighting fails". It is the responsibility of all employers to ensure that all these systems are suitably maintained and checked to ensure they are safe and compliant. All emergency lighting systems should be installed, tested and inspected in accordance with BS5266-1. Whether you already have a testing and maintenance programme in place or are starting from scratch, we are able to help you fulfil your saftey obligations by providing a reliable and cost effective testing service.
What does it involve?
Emergency Lighting Testing requires that every circuit supplying an emergency light is isolated to demonstrate that the internal
batteries in the emergency fitting keep the exits and exit routs illuminated during power failures. Every 12 months a full discharge test (1hr or 3hr, dependent on system installed) must be performed by a competent person to ensure the batteries are capable of lasting for the required period. Each light is inspected to ensure it operates correctly and that the lamp inside is functional. Furthermore our electrician will check that there are a sufficient number of lights and that the correct evacuation legends are fitted during the test visit to the premises.
The key to safe reliable operation is proper testing and maintenance. To ensure that testing and maintenance are properly carried out the building occupier should nominate a responsible person who will keep adequate records of the installation details, test reports and maintenance records.
The following test methods are recommended by BS5266, which also recommends that testing which involves extensive discharging of the batteries should, wherever possible, be undertaken at times of least risk as it is conceivable that an emergency situation mains failure could occur immediately after a test period. For example on a three hour system a one hour test could be carried out first thing in the morning when the system has the rest of the day to recharge. However a three hour discharge may have to be made on a Friday afternoon or a weekend when the building will not be occupied during the test or recharge periods.
BS5266 recommends the following test procedures:
Daily Check- indicator light and all maintained luminaries for correct operation.
Monthly Test- for a short period not exceeding one quarter of duration (Three hours)
Six Monthly Test- as above for at least one hour for three hour duration systems.
Three Yearly Test- as above for the full three hour duration.
Subsequently For self contained systems test yearly for full duration
During each test the lights should be checked for correct operation. After testing the supply should be restored and indicator lamp checked to ensure the system is charging correctly. It is recommended that the system is checked again in the next 24 to 40 hours after the six monthly or three yearly test. A comprehensive record of testing should be maintained including a log book.
We can provide all your portable appliance testing (commonly known as "PAT", "PAT Inspection" or "PAT Testing") this is a process by which electrical appliances are routinely checked for safety.
We use dedicated PAT testing equipment to provide a thorough low cost portable appliance testing service in accordance with the IEE IET Code of Practice for In-service Inspection & Testing of Electrical Equipment. We perform a visual inspection to check the appliance casing and flex for wear or damage. Plugs are also checked for damage,correct wiring and ensuring that the correct fuse rating is used. After the equipment has passed a visual inspection it will undergo a series of electrical tests using a fully calibrated electrical PAT tester.

Infrared Radiant Heating
Infrared could be considered to heating, what LEDs are to lighting. Running costs are very small compared to traditional Oil filled, Storage heaters, or fan heaters. Savings can also be made over that of Gas central heating, LPG or Oil.
Radiant (infrared) heating works in a similar way to the sun. You can go outside during the Winter and the air may be very cold. Within a short time, having the sun's rays on you will give some immidiate comfort...the air is still cold, but you are warm.
Infra red heating works in a similar way, but without the harmful ultra violet rays. It warms you and the objects within your home, rather than directly heating the air, which keeps
the heat within your property for a longer period of time. The ambient temperature of your home is then raised, but is managed much more effectively as it isn't the air holding the temperature, it is the solid objects and furnishings in your home.
Each room/heater can be controlled independently, which allows you to manage your energy consumption much more intelligently. This means that you only heat the rooms you want, when you want, and to your desired temperature. The use of thermostats with our infrared heaters means that the units are only powered when the room temperature drops below your desired temperature setting. Unlike convection heating where the energy is stored in the air which can dissipate very quickly, Infrared heat is retained much better and often means that our heaters are only drawing power for around 1/3 or half of the time depending on how well your home is insulated (eg 20-30 minutes out of every hour).
The panels are aesthetically pleasing, and unobtrusive, from plain white panels to coloured glass panels, to heated mirrors. This gives you the opportunity to finally rid yourself of those bulky storage heaters, or ugly metal radiators and pipes stuck on your walls. You don't have to remove your existing heating equipment, just turn it off and heat your home with your new Infrared panels instead.
The attraction of infra red heating is to give each of your rooms an evenly distributed heat, instead of a hot ceiling and cold floor, whilst only drawing a small amount of energy to reach your optimum temperature. This gives you full control over the distribution of heat
throughout your home, and at what temperature. In addition to all of these benefits, you don't have the ongoing maintenance costs that go with a traditional boiler.
For those people lucky enough to have photo voltaic solar panels at their home you may have a particular advantage as you are able to power your Infrared heaters for free at times; Reducing your Gas bill (or other heating fuel costs) whilst not affecting your FIT or Export tarrif returns in any way at all.

Why are Solar Panels being installed?
Solar panels in the UK are rapidly being installed to take advantage of nature's free resource - the sun. In the United Kingdom we benefit from long daylight hours and a generally cooler climate which provides ideal conditions for Photovoltaic Solar panels. Often referred to as solar PV, this is a type of solar cell system that uses semiconductor technology to convert electromagnetic radiation energy from sunlight into electricity. Government solar panel incentives helped drive the solar industry in its infancy to negate high prices. Now the main benefit of a residential solar panel installation is the energy savings which makes your electricity bill smaller. With electricity provider's ever increasing charges solar panels have become an attractive solution to reduce your dependancy on buying electricity from your supplier. Photo voltaic solar panels work by collecting photons (particles of light) which they turn into useful electricity. Multiple solar cells make up a full size solar panel typically measuring 1m x 1.7m. How you save money with Solar panels

Not only do you save money but from April 2019 you may also earn a small payment for the unused energy that you export. This is called the Smart Energy Guarantee (SEG) and has been proposed by the UK government's department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). The purpose is to ensure energy suppliers pay small-scale generators for the excess electricity they export to the grid. Consultation ran from 8 January 2019 to 5 March 2019 with BEIS now analysing feedback. Storage of the energy has much greater value however as the SEG payments are far smaller than the cost of energy- therefore we wan't to capture as much of your solar generation as possible with the addition of li-ion home enery storage. When your batteries are full you may then export a little with the knowledge that you're benefiting further from SEG payments.
